What A Ratard.

Oh my god I've hit the stress wall.

I still don't have a roommate. I am so pissed off with my current roommate that is moving out it's not even funny. I had someone come to look at the place the other night and she happened to come home at the same time. That's not a big deal at all except she took it upon herself to join in the conversation by saying things like:

"Yeah it's a really great area." (Not so bad, but still, none of your business so just leave the conversation please.)

Then she decided it was necessary to say right in front of this person, "oh my god the kid upstairs woke me up at 4 o clock this morning and kept me awake for 45 minutes!!! This has been going on way too long now!"

Are you fucking kidding me? First off, you stay here maybe one or two nights a week. Second off, the kid is 3 years old. If the kid was in fact up at 4am (I've NEVER been woken up by ANYONE upstairs ever in the 2 and a half years I've lived here for) then she was likely sick because that's what happens to children when they're sick, either that or the kid had a nightmare and is terrified. 3 year olds don't just wake up at 4am without reason typically. Not to mention she never said a word about it to me so if it was going on for more than one night then I sure as fuck didn't know anything about it because I would have mentioned it to the landlord.

I wanted to lose it. Does she not think before she speaks? No I'm not going to sit here and lie to someone and be like "ohh yeah it's super quiet here" if it wasn't. But the fact of the matter is that for the most part I don't hear too much noise coming from upstairs. At night time it's always quiet and during the day who gives a shit if the kids are stomping around upstairs. They're kids, you can't expect them to be perfectly quiet. But who the hell does she think she is sitting there even talking to this guy as if she's the one doing the interview when she won't even fucking live here come Thursday?! Fuck. She's spent maybe 2 weeks total sleeping in this house since she moved in at the beginning of February, yet she seems to be able to have an opinion? Fuck off.

I'm so fucking angry about it. So of course the guy was like "oh okay well I'll get back to you on it..." yeah whatever.

UGH.

Whatever indeed. I have another guy I will be meeting up with on Thursday night. I hope he takes it. That would really take a load off of my mind.

My other stress right now is that my schedule is going through the roof this month. Mondays I get up at 4:30 in the morning and I'm not home until 10:30/11 at night. I literally do not sit down for more than half an hour in that time frame. Tuesday's to Friday I will be working a minimum of 10 hour days, to an upwards of 16 or more when shit goes through the roof next week. Saturdays and Sundays I get up at 7am and get ready to leave for school by 8ish. I'm not home until 6:30/7 at night.

Now... to add to this stress, it is the last month of school. This means we have not one, not two, but THREE tests every single monday from now until we graduate (one written and two practical.) This doesn't include our final written exam or the final practical exam. Then there is also our grad show that we have to prepare for, thankfully we have two weeks of no clients at the end of april so we can do that during class. BUT I still have to pick music, figure out costume, and of course, get my models which is all stuff that has to be done on my own time outside of class. I will be putting up a craigslist ad this week and poaching people like you wouldn't believe!

And on top of it all I still have to fit in 20 hours of work experience at the salon I will be working at once I'm done school.

Shit.Show.

I'm also a little frustrated because I have everyone wanting me to finish my steel fab apprenticeship yet again. Honestly yes I would love to finish it, but I didn't just pay 10 grand to go to school for something I am absolutely obsessed with just to go back to steel fab. It's frustrating me that everyone is pushing for me to go back into steel fab. Yes I understand that hairdresser wages suck when you first start out but I honestly don't care at this point. I know that it is going to be really hard for me financially for a few years. I know that I will have to work two jobs in order to make it work. But basically, here is what I'm being offered right now:

Steel fab apprenticeship - 2 years left to go with an end salary of 30+ bucks an hour,

OR

Basically minimum wage but being trained by a Joico stage artist that's won the following awards: 2007 Colourist of the year, 2007 Multicultural stylist of the year, 2007 BC/Alberta stylist of the year, 2005 and 2007 BC stylist of the year... and on top of it has been a finalist for the 2009 mirror awards for BC stylist and Avant Garde, and 2008's BC stylist for the Contessa awards.

This woman's work is featured in magazines that are distributed all over the world. How could I ever even consider passing up an opportunity to work with her and be trained by her? It shocks me that some people don't get that.

I hate leaving things unfinished when it comes to things like this, so yes it actually pains me to think about walking away from steel fab without finishing my apprenticeship and it terrifies me to know that I'm taking a HUGE pay cut yet again but I'm just going to go with my gut on this one. I feel like I'm making the right choice and I'll do whatever I have to do to get through the next year or two because I'm pretty sure I would be kicking myself down the road for passing something like this up.

Sigh. Welcome to my basket case life. May 1st could not come fast enough! I was doing so well without getting too stressed out but today is a different story. I think I have good reason.

Frig am I ever looking forward to coffee with Alicia tomorrow! I need a time out and some good old fashioned girl time. Also, my best friend Kat is in town tonight so I will be meeting up with her in about an hour or so. I can't wait to give her hugs and rub her little pregnant belly! She is having a healthy baby boy! She had to come down here for an extra ultrasound because they had some borderline results at their last ultrasound but everything is okay!

Thank God for great friends otherwise I'm pretty sure I'd be going completely insane right now!

Quick Stop

These blogs are getting few and far between.

Here's what I'm up to:

-I'm working at the shop again. I am no longer working in the office and haven't been for about a month. I'll be there for at least a month, but likely until I'm finished school. Then I will be going to work for On The Fringe Hair Design on Main St. Pretty stoked about having that job lined up because it's an incredible opportunity.

-I am in search of a new roommate for April 1st so I'm still in the process of finding people and setting up "interviews."

- I have a test every week this month, and a few next month as well. Then it's the final grad show so I'm balls deep in that right now. I'm still looking for models for my final grad presentation. I need 5 in total, 2 long layers (cough Danielle and Alicia!,) 2 bobs (one blunt and one soft edge,) and a mens cut. If you yourself are interested or know someone who might be please let me know! The hair has to be coloured and cut but the colour can simply be a clear gloss which just adds shine to your hair, and both the colour and cut will be FREE. So people keep an eye out for potentials and have them get ahold of me!

- I've been spending a lot of time with Jamie and Lisa this past while. The three of us are always out doing stuff, I just never document any of it. Lisa came over the other night to bake cookies and play guitar. Jamie and I have a tendency to end up shopping even when we least intend to.

I don't know. Honestly, I've been up to a lot but at the same time not much. It's back to the 60 hour work/school weeks which will probably go up soon since the shop just got a big project. Soooooo yeah, you probably won't be hearing from me too much now until I graduate.

I feel like I'm constantly playing catch up right now. I need to find time to do laundry and pay bills and all that jazz. I have a ton of phonecalls to make, and emails that need to be written. It's never ending really and quite boring indeed.

I've been a hermit the last little while as well. I'm exhausted though. I've had about 10 hours of sleep in the last 3 days. It's fucking bedtime.

The Time Rewinds To The End Of May

This morning I had an interview at On The Fringe Hair Design and I'm happy to say it went very well.

I arrived for my interview at 10am and was shockingly calm. Normally I get really nervous but for some reason today was a little bit different. This was the first time I have ever done an interview at a salon and I'm sure it won't be the last.

This salon is particularly great. They are incredibly team oriented, are very adamant that continued education is as important going through school in the first place, and they strive to have all of their stylists introduced into the world of competition.

Typically in many salons the concept of continuous education gets lost somewhere along the lines. It is a lot of work for salon owners to set up classes and keep teams motivated but if you have a motivated team then you more often than not will end up incredibly successful. Also, if you do continue to do new classes and teach the latest trends it is very beneficial for both the salon and the stylist. It is easy to lose motivation when you stop learning. This is one of the biggest reasons why I love hairdressing so much. With everything I have ever done I get to a point where I get bored because I don't feel like I am learning anything anymore, and once I start getting bored I lose all motivation and desire to want to be there. This never happens in this career and should it ever happen then it's time you switch careers. When you're in an industry that changes with every season you will start to see repeat trends but everything gets modernized so nothing is ever really the same.

This is the case at this particular salon. The owner is a JOICO stage artist and is incredibly talented. She is a part of the JOICO team and has incorporated that into her own salon by teaching their program. There is at least one class per month where we are taught new methods of colouring and cutting but all will follow the JOICO way. As most people know - JOICO has been around for quite some time now. They have started to mass market and stock their products on the shelves of your local drug stores. What you don't see often with this line though is the beautiful work that they actually produce and their phenomenal colour line. They have definitely mastered their products.

So during my interview we discussed the salons program. How exactly being an apprentice/junior stylist works. Basically I would start off at the Main St. location as an apprentice. For the first little while I would do reception duties, watch as much as possible, as well as take some extra classes at the salon. I would cut and colour when asked to and when both the manager and I feel I'm ready I would be put full time on the floor. Instead of working on the floor at Main St though I would move out to the UBC location as a Junior Stylist. I would work there for 2 years. The reason she sends her new stylists to the UBC location is because there is a TON of people so you don't need a clientelle. You make commission which is rare for new stylists but you are booked solid out there. 2 years at this salon can give you as much as experience as up to 5 years at other salons.

After two years at the UBC location I would "graduate" to Advanced Stylist. I would then go back to the Main st. location since I would now have a clientelle that would be willing to follow me there, I will still be on commission but my prices will have gone up and I will make quite a lot more.

So this is basically the plan. She really liked me and I really liked her. She has won many awards for BC, Alberta, and Canada. She has been the Canadian Colourist of The Year, been a finalist many times in some other major competitions, and has recently opened her third salon. So, I will be doing my work experience with her in April and after that should I "want the job" (obviously I do) then I would start as soon as I am done school.

It will be amazing. I loved the salon and I know I will learn SO much there and I can hardly wait to get started. I think what I liked most though is that she is just a girl from a small town much like me, and is doing everything with her career that I could only hope I get to do with mine. This could be a very grueling 2.5-3 year process but it would be so worth it. You've always got to start somewhere right?

So, we'll see how this goes. A lot could change by the end of the course and other job opportunity's may present themselves but this would be a fantastic start to my career.

I wanted to add pictures to this but unfortunately blogger isn't letting me so apologies for another picture-less post.

Well That Was Awkward...

Last night after class Jamie mentioned she wanted to go shopping and asked if I wanted to go to metrotown with her today. I figured I'd tag along even though I'm on a strict "no shopping allowed" rule since it would give me something to do. She called me this morning and I told her I would meet her at Commercial Drive Station and we would go from there.

So, I'm on the skytrain and I'm listening to my ipod. I have it as loud as it can go so that I can try to drown out the noise of the skytrain and everyone around me - just like I always do. Meanwhile, there is a guy sitting directly across from me and I kept noticing him looking at me. I tried to ignore it and would look out the windows or look down, until I happened to glance up and he was trying to talk to me.

I didn't want to be rude so I took my headphones out and this is what he says... and I quote:

"Hi there, I'm sorry but... if you could be any creature or animal, would you be a cat?"

Uhm what?

I was so taken off guard that all I could respond with was "uh... no? Why? Do I look like a fucking cat?"

He laughed and goes "well sorta, the eyes, the hair, it's nice though." ... ooooooookay.

So at this point I'm a little more than weirded out but he wouldn't just leave it be at that. Instead he decided to go with the good old trusty, "So what's your zodiac?" ... Really guy? People actually use that line?!

Still, taken completely off guard I couldn't even remotely try to think up a lie for any of this stuff. His questions were so all over the place that there was no way in hell you would be able to bullshit him. So I responded with "uh, virgo libra" ... To this response he immediately starts quoting what my traits would be, what sort of person I am like (and I'll give the guy this, he knows his astrology because he pegged me to a friggen T.)

Still incredibly weirded out he continued to ask me if I'd ever been to this one Salt something place? I can't really remember what he was talking about on that one because I was still trying to wrap my head around the first few questions... particularly the cat question.

Let me just reiterate... The things he would talk about or ask me would come completely out of no where. I wasn't asking any questions back, just simply answering the ones he would ask me, and even that I was completely weirded out by.

My stop could not come fast enough and I just hoped with everything in me that Jamie was already there so I could escape this incredibly awkward situation.

He was nice and everything, had very nice teeth and wasn't terrible looking by any means, just very strange.

He went on to ask me what I was getting up to for the day, why I was so dressed up, what kind of music I was into... at least some relatively normal questions for once.

When I got off the skytrain he was asking if he could get my number though, and was walking along side me as I was getting off. Now I've said this before to a few of my friends now, and I'm going to say it again: I NEED TO LEARN HOW TO FUCKING LIE.

I am the WORST liar on the planet, I get busted instantly, and I cannot for the life of me give out fake numbers because I'm always taken way too off guard to do so. So this guy asks for my number and I actually gave it to him. WHAT THE FUCK.

Thank God Jamie met me at the same time so that I could quickly bail before he had anymore time to ask any other weird questions.

This is going to be really entertaining when he tries to add me to facebook. At least I can ignore his calls or anything like that. I don't answer numbers I don't know anyways but fack. So awkward. If he tries to add me to facebook I am going to creep him out a bit HAH.

Ahhh I still can't figure out the first question... talk about a way to start a conversation. "If you could be any creature or animal, would you be a cat?"

Ridiculous.

I'll Re-write This Tomorrow...

This bitchy mood I've had all night has really put a damper on my list of things to do this evening.

On that list consisted putting up an ad for a new roommate. This is what I have so far:

Hi there,

I have a room for rent in a basement suite in Burnaby. Great location, 8-10 minute walk from Lake City Way Skytrain station, nice and quiet neighborhood. Large bedroom, approx 15x10 feet. Bedroom is unfurnished but everything else is taken care of.

Rent is 450 per month, that includes everything except for internet which is an extra 25 bucks per month. You will have to meet the landlords. No lease needed, can be month to month.

What I'm looking for:

I am looking for a temporary roommate as I am thinking of moving out for September 1st. However, if you would like to continue renting this place should I decide to leave you may do so; you would just have to discuss it with the landlords upon doing so, or pay the full 900/month rent.

Looking for someone on the quiet side, a student or working professional between the ages of 22-28. Male or female, doesn't really matter just so long as you're not creepy. All I ask is that you're respectful and tidy.

If you're at the bar every single weekend getting plastered, that's fine, just don't come home and wake me up at 3/4 in the morning, and unfortunately no partying here. Friends over every so often is fine just no parties. If however you particularly love to end up sleeping on the bathroom floor or in the shower, then again, probably not gonna fly. Once in awhile that happens to the best of us but it can't be an every weekend occurrence.

Absolutely no smokers, and no drugs either. Zero tolerance from the landlords. No pets either unfortunately, and that is also a landlord preference so please no emails starting off with "I think I'm great but... I have a cat." Save your efforts because I can't bend on that one. (I have tried. Close but no cigar.)

... I've decided maybe I should write this tomorrow... when I'm less of an asshole. Can you sense my loss of patience for roommate searches?

Blondes and Cupcakes

I haven't blogged for awhile, and I haven't overly felt like it either. The Oscars are tonight and I should be watching them to see what the latest celebrity updo trends are but I haven't quite made it to the couch yet. I just got home from class and I'm a little bit hungry and a lot tired.

I'm in a bit of a bad mood for some reason. The girls were going out for Tonya's birthday tonight but I decided not to go out this weekend. I need a good long break. I've got a lot of things going on this week so I need to continue to work all of that out.

As I expected would happen, my roommate will be moving out at the end of the month. It's for an entirely different reason than I originally expected, but has ended with the same reason. Let's just say there was a little unexpected baby that unexpectedly miscarried shortly after someone unexpectedly got pregnant. She put in her notice but still decided she would move out. She spends most of her time downtown at her boyfriends so it really is a pointless thing for her to pay rent here. It's too bad too because I actually do really like her and she's been great this far. Oh well though.

A friend of mine is moving here in September and wants to move in with me so I'm going to try to find someone temporarily until then. Mainly because I would rather live with my friend than complete strangers at this point.

I've also decided that when she moves in with me we're just going to find a new place. I'm getting a little tired of this place now and I feel like I need a change of scenery. I'll have been living here for 2 and a half years come that time so that's quite a long time to stay in one place for when you're renting. No one likes moving but I could definitely use a change. I'm going to look for places in both Burnaby and Vancouver. Maybe more East Van.

I have a job interview on Wednesday at a salon on Main Street. It's in quite a trendy little area and it seems like a fantastic salon so I am really crossing my fingers that I'll get it. The position is for a junior stylist/apprentice which, surprisingly, is a position quite hard to come by. The team seems incredibly talented and I know I could learn a lot from them. They're very involved with hair shows as well as continuing education which is a huge plus. There are a lot of salons that just stick to the basics but I definitely want to be somewhere that's more involved with all aspects of the industry, not simply just going to work and doing your thing.

Work experience week is over so we are now halfway through our course. This means that every cut we do on our mannequins from here on out is marked as a test cut. We have always been graded on our cuts before, but these ones are actually graded for our final exam. No pressure at all. Naht.

I'm starting to change my mind on the idea of going to London for a year and am instead considering going to Australia. I discussed London with a few people that have worked there as hairdressers and yes you do learn a lot but it is incredibly hard to make a living over there. Literally some stylists make 100 pounds a week. That's not very much at all when the cost of living is so high. So that is definitely x'ing that idea for me for now. I will go there one day but it will have to be when I can afford to make piss poor money for the 6-12 months that I'm there for.

So... Australia here I come! It actually sounds way more appealing in terms of weather and beaches... and men... and teeth. Australian guys are friggen hot. Well, the stereotypical ones at least. No but in all honesty, I've heard good things about Australia as well as jobs over there so it's probably more up my alley. I can hardly wait! Alicia you had better get your shit together 'cause I'm coming to visit in a year or two!

I suppose I should go make some food and check out some celebrity hair. I've already missed a good chunk of it by now. Man I'm hungry. I suppose cake batter for breakfast, left over pasta for lunch, and half of a giant cookie isn't much for a day. Don't judge.

A Treasured Memory I Will Never Forget

Three weeks ago I could honestly say I feared what the Olympics were going to be like. I worried about transit and how ridiculously busy this city was going to be. But, now that it's come to an end I can honestly say I am sad to see it all leave. (Well for the most part, of course we still have the paralympics but you know what I'm getting at.)

What an incredible two weeks. I sat in a pub today watching our country play hockey (oh, how we do it best) and as we won gold I started to cry. I have never in my life felt so patriotic as I have these last two weeks. I have never seen so many people be so warm hearted towards one another (aside from the American the entire skytrain fingered after we won Gold - for good reason, he was still being an arrogant cocksucker.) And never before have I ever felt so proud to be a Canadian.

Had I still lived in Fort St. James I never would have been able to experience this incredible adventure.

No I didn't go see a single event, no I didn't even step foot into any of the houses; I just found it amazing to walk down the street where everyone high fives you and cheers while they sport their Canada gear. You can call me lame, whatever, but I truly enjoyed just being a part of the crowd.

Today this city truly showed me what it was like to be a Canadian. I have always felt pride in this country but definitely not like this.

Congratulations Vancouver, I think you did an incredible job hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics. It feels so weird to know that the streets will soon be quiet again but I will never forget this experience.

I only wish everyone I love could have been here to experience it with me.
